Controls follow the hierarchy of control. The duty holder determines what is tolerable and owns the chosen method (WHS Reg falling-objects duty; tethering per DROPS / ANSI/ISEA 121).
Assumptions & limits
- Blunt object assumed. Not valid for broken glass, metal shards or sharp items - those are worse.
- Standard PPE assumed (hard hat, boots, eye protection). The 40 J recordable threshold is for an unprotected body.
- Measure the fall to solid ground - do not subtract a person's height.
- Boundary energies round up. Exactly 40 / 100 / 500 J classify to the higher (worse) band - conservative by design.
- Guide only. A cursory indication of possible outcome, not an accurate prediction. Even a small object from height can be lethal.
